Under the National Education Policy 2020, colleges in Assam have moved from the three-year B.Sc to the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). If you are confused about Major, Minor and SEC, this guide is for you.
What changes with FYUGP?
The degree is now four years, with an option to leave earlier.
You choose a Major subject (for example Zoology) and a Minor subject.
You also take Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), ability courses and value-added courses.
Exit options
Under the NEP framework you can:
Leave after 1 year with a certificate
Leave after 2 years with a diploma
Leave after 3 years with a bachelor's degree
Complete 4 years for a bachelor's degree with Honours, or Honours with Research
Rules can differ slightly between universities, so always read your own university's regulations.
Major, Minor and SEC in simple words
Major: your main subject. Most of your credits come from here. For zoology students this covers animal diversity, cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology and more.
Minor: a second subject that adds breadth, for example Botany or Chemistry.
SEC: practical, job-oriented courses such as apiculture, sericulture, aquaculture or lab techniques.
